 Artist Statement

Exploration and curiosity is something that I think about when describing how I approach my art making. It's the way I learn about our planet and the landscapes that make it beautiful. Using textiles and weaving I am able to create art that represents my curiosity to explore the world, the beauty it possesses and why it is important to preserve nature. Materials such as hand-dyed cotton fabric, beads, silk, cotton yarn and thread painting allow me to transform imagery to create abstracted landscapes. Using these techniques and processes allows me to create shadow and depth. Through the process of hand dying fabric I am able to make a personal connection to experiences I have not had but dream of having. I use my own interpretations to guide me in choosing colors to use in each of my pieces. The colors make the piece more unique by how each color interacts with each other. By creating a block drawing based off of photos of each location I am able to see the color interactions before creating the piece.

My inspiration develops from my dreams to travel the world and from places I have been and the natural phenomena that occur within nature. I create art as a way to express my perceptions and feelings of the world around me. Through my research I am able to find what makes each place truly unique and how I can relate to that place. I imagine what it would be like to see the places in real life and use those feelings in my work to spark imagination in myself and my viewers.
